Zo\u015bka Papu\u017canka’s book, He<\/em>, was published by Znak<\/a> Publishing House in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her book, He<\/em>, Papu\u017canka creates a microcosm of the Krakow’s housing estate, where mythological time prevails. Everything here has its own place and time: sorrowful mothers run with nets, silent fathers work at the steelworks, teachers are mean but have great aspirations; there is a school, a church and a mangle. And not even regime changes can disturb the age-old rhythm according to which life goes on here. The Chief Traffic Dispatcher has laid down the tracks of life and personally sees to it that there are no changes to the timetable. But then he appears, Sleepyhead. We don’t know his name, but the nickname has stuck to him so strongly that he has melted with the boy into an inseparable whole. Although Sleepyhead (\u015apik originally names in Polish) is passionate about trams and knows everything about them, he does not fit into any of life’s tracks or even paths. At most, he can be run over by such a metaphorical tram. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His mother knows this very well and this book is about her. And about her daily struggle. She fights for her son. She fights to push him, if not onto the right track, then at least into the ruts which he will somehow follow. She fights for him to cope at school, then at work. So that he can cope with life when it is gone. He also fights not to stop believing in him. And he fights not to think of him as \u015apik, but of himself as \u015apik’s mum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently the book is only available in Polish under the name On<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wszystko ma tu w\u0142asne miejsce i por\u0119: frasobliwe mamy biegaj\u0105 z siatkami, milcz\u0105cy ojcowie pracuj\u0105 na hucie, nauczyciele s\u0105 wredni, ale maj\u0105 wielkie aspiracje; jest szko\u0142a, ko\u015bci\u00f3\u0142 i magiel. I nawet zmiany ustrojowe nie mog\u0105 zaburzy\u0107 odwiecznego rytmu, wed\u0142ug kt\u00f3rego toczy si\u0119 tu \u017cycie. G\u0142\u00f3wny Dyspozytor Ruchu wytyczy\u0142 tory \u017cycia i osobi\u015bcie pilnuje, \u017ceby nie by\u0142o zmian w rozk\u0142adzie jazdy. Ale pojawia si\u0119 on, \u015apik. Nie wiemy jak ma na imi\u0119, przezwisko przylgn\u0119\u0142o na tyle mocno, \u017ce stopi\u0142o si\u0119 z ch\u0142opcem w nierozerwaln\u0105 ca\u0142o\u015b\u0107. \u015apik cho\u0107 pasjonuje si\u0119 tramwajami i wie o nich wszystko, nie pasuje do \u017cadnych \u017cyciowych tor\u00f3w czy nawet \u015bcie\u017cek. Co najwy\u017cej mo\u017ce zosta\u0107 rozjechany przez taki metaforyczny tramwaj. Doskonale wie o tym jego mama i to o niej jest ta ksi\u0105\u017cka. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I o jej codziennej walce. Walczy o syna. Walczy o to by wepchn\u0105\u0107 go, je\u015bli nie na w\u0142a\u015bciwe tory, to przynajmniej w koleiny, kt\u00f3rymi jako\u015b dalej sam pod\u0105\u017cy. Walczy o to, by poradzi\u0142 sobie w szkole, potem w pracy. By poradzi\u0142 sobie w \u017cyciu, gdy jej ju\u017c zabraknie. Walczy te\u017c o to, by nie przesta\u0107 w niego wierzy\u0107. I walczy o to, by nie my\u015ble\u0107 o nim \u015apik, a o sobie mama \u015apika.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
