The great Gilly Hopkins is a book by Katherine Paterson which was originally published in 1978 and has been republished multiple times since. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We learn “that all those stories about happy endings are lies “* as we gather more and more experience in life. Then we confront our expectations with reality and sooner or later we come to the conclusion that life goes on in its own rhythm, independent of our imagination. Sometimes it is happy, sometimes difficult, and we have to take it as it is. Enjoy the happiness and deal with the difficulties. I think this is called maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maturity is not lacking in eleven-year-old Gilly, the protagonist of Katherine Paterson’s book. In Gilly’s case, her maturity was not determined by time, but by her experiences, especially bad ones. First, she was abandoned by her mother, then she was rejected by successive foster families. The reader meets the girl when she is on her way to another family. This time Gilly has a firm resolve not to get hurt again. To that end, she has come up with a plan: she will not allow anyone to like her, not to mention that she herself has absolutely no intention of getting attached to people or places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Important topics <\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Katherine Paterson touches on very important topics in the book. She shows the emotions and feelings of a child whose behavior gives back everything that she herself got earlier. A child who desperately needs to “be somebody’s”, so he glorifies his absent and indifferent mother while ignoring others. The author also questions whether a surrogate mother has the right to feel and to what extent she can become emotionally involved. A surrogate mother must create a loving and caring home for her charge, but she must never forget that it is not her child. Paterson also asks what is ultimately better for the child, the biological family or the foster family? Or is it possible to love both families?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while the issues raised in the book are very serious, the author tells them with remarkable humor and warmth. This makes the book all the more beautiful and subtle. The characters, although a bit exaggerated as it is in children’s literature, are extremely authentic, it is impossible not to like them. But don’t be fooled by the label “children’s literature”. This is no fairy tale or imaginary children’s story. Many adults can learn a lot from the wonderful and wise Gilly. Because this story is as true as can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Konfrontujemy wtedy nasze oczekiwania z rzeczywisto\u015bci\u0105 i pr\u0119dzej czy p\u00f3\u017aniej dochodzimy do wniosku, \u017ce \u017cycie toczy si\u0119 swoim w\u0142asnym rytmem, niezale\u017cnym od naszych wyobra\u017ce\u0144. Czasem jest szcz\u0119\u015bliwe, czasem trudne, a my musimy je bra\u0107 takim, jakim jest. Cieszy\u0107 si\u0119 szcz\u0119\u015bciem, a z trudno\u015bciami si\u0119 upora\u0107. To chyba nazywa si\u0119 dojrza\u0142o\u015b\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dojrza\u0142o\u015bci nie brakuje jedenastoletniej Gilly, bohaterce ksi\u0105\u017cki Katherine Paterson. W przypadku Gilly o jej dojrza\u0142o\u015bci nie zadecydowa\u0142 czas a baga\u017c do\u015bwiadcze\u0144, szczeg\u00f3lnie tych z\u0142ych. Najpierw porzuci\u0142a j\u0105 mama, potem odrzuca\u0142y j\u0105 kolejne rodziny zast\u0119pcze. Czytelnik poznaje dziewczynk\u0119, gdy ta jest w drodze do kolejnej rodziny. Tym razem Gilly ma twarde postanowienie, nie da si\u0119 kolejny raz skrzywdzi\u0107. W tym celu wymy\u015bli\u0142a plan: nie dopu\u015bci do tego, \u017ceby kto\u015b j\u0105 polubi\u0142, nie m\u00f3wi\u0105c ju\u017c o tym, \u017ce sama nie ma najmniejszego zamiaru przywi\u0105zywa\u0107 si\u0119 do ludzi czy miejsc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wa\u017cne tematy<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Katherine Paterson dotyka w ksi\u0105\u017cce bardzo wa\u017cnych temat\u00f3w. Pokazuje emocje i uczucia dziecka, kt\u00f3re swoim zachowaniem oddaje wszystko to, co samo wcze\u015bniej dosta\u0142o. Dziecka, kt\u00f3re rozpaczliwie potrzebuje “by\u0107 czyje\u015b”, wi\u0119c gloryfikuje nieobecn\u0105 i oboj\u0119tn\u0105 matk\u0119 ignoruj\u0105c przy tym innych. Autorka zadaje te\u017c pytanie o to, czy matka zast\u0119pcza ma prawo czu\u0107 i do jakiego stopnia mo\u017ce si\u0119 zaanga\u017cowa\u0107 emocjonalnie. Matka zast\u0119pcza musi stworzy\u0107 kochaj\u0105cy i troskliwy dom dla swojego podopiecznego, ale nigdy nie mo\u017ce zapomnie\u0107, \u017ce to nie jej dziecko. Paterson pyta te\u017c o to, co ostatecznie jest lepsze dla dziecka, rodzina biologiczna czy zast\u0119pcza? A mo\u017ce da si\u0119 kocha\u0107 obie rodziny?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cho\u0107 problemy poruszane w ksi\u0105\u017cce s\u0105 bardzo powa\u017cne, autorka opowiada je z niezwyk\u0142ym poczuciem humoru i ciep\u0142em. Czyni to ksi\u0105\u017ck\u0119 tym pi\u0119kniejsz\u0105 i subtelniejsz\u0105. Postaci bohater\u00f3w, chocia\u017c jak to w literaturze dzieci\u0119cej nieco przerysowane, s\u0105 wyj\u0105tkowo autentyczne, nie da si\u0119 ich nie polubi\u0107. Ale nie dajcie si\u0119 zwie\u015b\u0107 etykietce “literatura dzieci\u0119ca”. To nie \u017cadna bajka czy wymy\u015blona dzieci\u0119ca historyjka. Sporo doros\u0142ych mo\u017ce si\u0119 wiele nauczy\u0107 od wspania\u0142ej i m\u0105drej Gilly. Bo ta historia jest jak najbardziej prawdziwa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
